Why I liked this title:
When Vernon's mother dies, his father is too busy with the rest of his large family and the day-to-day problems to notice that Vernon is having many problems in junior high. One day Vernon defends an alcoholic neighborhood lady, the local "crazy lady," and her mentally handicapped son Ronald. As a result, Vernon's life changes for the better. This is not a "happily ever after" story, but a quiet story that deals with real problems that good people have to face every day and the things they have to do to survive.
