Why I liked this title:

Set in the 12th century, this book, the first in a planned trilogy, is the story of two English brothers, Gavin and William. They, along with their father, journey to Jerusalem to serve Richard the Lionheart in the Third Crusade. William is accompanied by his beloved horse, Hosanna. The brothers experience war, death, hunger, and other horrors. Their lives and the lives of those they love hang in the balance. In addition to the brothers, we meet Kamil, a young Muslim boy, who has also experienced many horrors in his life. His life intersects William and Gavin's leaving them all changed forever.

I found this book to be exceptional. I was so engrossed in trying to guess what was going to happen next. The writing is descriptive, the plot is swift-moving and the characters are very memorable. I learned much about the Crusades, a topic I had never read about in great detail. I can't wait to read the second book in the trilogy, Green Jasper.
