Why I liked this title:

This funny and poignant story is told in an interesting format that includes letters and articles from a small town newspaper. Nine-year-old Ruby Lavender undertakes wonderful adventures with her adoring grandmother, Miss Eula. Together they stage a raid on an egg ranch, rescuing three chickens before they met the fate of being served as someone’s dinner. They paint Miss Eula’s house an outrageous shade of pink, making it the talk of the town; and they also share their sadness over the death of Grandpa Garnet whose passing seems to be clouded by a terrible secret. When Miss Eula decides unexpectedly to visit her son and new granddaughter in Hawaii, Ruby is left to cope with her sorrow as well as the hard feelings between her and Melba. Melba is another 4th grader whose father died in the same car accident with Ruby’s grandpa. When, on the spur of the moment, Ruby steps in and saves Melba’s performance in the town musical, the two girls are finally able to talk about the car accident, helping Ruby finally come to terms with her grandpa’s death.
